When you convert a YouTube video to audio, you're asked to choose a format. MP3, M4A, WAV — what's the difference, and which one should you pick? This guide breaks it down in plain English so you can make the right choice every time.
Audio formats determine how sound is stored digitally. The main tradeoff is always between file size and audio quality. Some formats compress audio heavily to save space (like MP3), while others preserve every detail of the original recording (like WAV).
For everyday use — streaming, casual listening, saving YouTube videos — a compressed format is perfectly fine. The human ear cannot detect the difference between a well-encoded MP3 and the original in most listening environments.
MP3 (MPEG Audio Layer III) was invented in the 1990s and became the world's most popular audio format. Its genius was in compressing audio to a fraction of its original size while keeping it sounding good — a 4-minute song that would take 40MB as an uncompressed file fits into just 4-8MB as an MP3.
At 320kbps (kilobits per second), MP3 sounds excellent — nearly indistinguishable from lossless audio for most listeners. At 128kbps, it sounds perfectly fine for podcasts and voice content but you may notice slight degradation in complex music.
M4A is a container format that uses the AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) codec — the same codec used by Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube itself. It was designed as a successor to MP3 and achieves better audio quality at the same or smaller file size.
At 256kbps, M4A sounds noticeably better than MP3 at the same bitrate. Apple uses 256kbps AAC for all its Apple Music tracks, which gives you an idea of the quality level.
WAV (Waveform Audio File Format) stores audio without any compression. What you get is a perfect, bit-for-bit copy of the audio — exactly as it sounds in a recording studio. The tradeoff is file size: a 4-minute song in WAV format takes around 40-50MB compared to 4-8MB for an MP3.
SoundRip does not currently offer WAV output since YouTube's audio streams are already compressed — converting to WAV wouldn't improve quality, it would just create unnecessarily large files.

For most people, MP3 320kbps is the best choice — it sounds excellent, plays on every device, and keeps file sizes manageable. If you use Apple devices and care about the highest possible quality, choose M4A 256kbps. For podcasts and voice content where quality is less critical, MP3 128kbps saves space without any noticeable difference.
